What many guests describe after the retreat is a little peace with their own body: fewer midnight searches, and room to notice a sensation without fearing the worst. Since 2012 we have held a medically supervised iboga retreat on the Mayan Riviera near Cancun, Mexico, where a traditional Missoko Bwiti ceremony is paired with therapy and three months of follow-up at home. It is a complement to CBT for health anxiety, never a replacement. If every ache sends you to a search engine, you are not alone.
If you are thinking about ending your life, please reach out today: call or text 988 in the United States or Canada. In the US you can also chat at chat.988lifeline.org. You deserve help now, not after a retreat.

Health anxiety: the ceremony, the numbers, the research and how to prepare.
How it works
Cyberchondria is not a medical diagnosis, and no study has tested iboga or ibogaine for it or for health anxiety. So we never promise a change in the fear itself. What we offer is a supervised opening alongside therapy: a long night of reflection held by a tradition and a medical team, then three months of support at home, with CBT as the base of the work.
Before you travel, our physician reviews your health and your medicines, once and clearly. The night brings strong sensations in the body, so she explains them beforehand. She and the medical team stay in the room all night.
In the Missoko Bwiti tradition the ceremony begins with the person, not the symptom. Guests often describe a long, lucid review of their life, sometimes including where the fear of illness first took hold. Belief is not required.
Screening with our psychologist, the ceremonies, a life review the next day, then three months of integration calls. With your consent we write to your own therapist, so CBT for health anxiety goes on at home.
How iboga acts on the brain
Health anxiety runs on a loop: a sensation, a fearful reading of it, a search or a check, short relief, then new doubt. In theory, the iboga alkaloids touch systems tied to worry loops. Ibogaine and its long-lived metabolite noribogaine act on the serotonin transporter, a target shared with SSRI antidepressants. Ibogaine also acts on NMDA glutamate receptors, which are involved in learning and fear memory. Animal studies suggest a single dose switches on growth-factor genes linked to plasticity.
None of this has been tested for health anxiety. In a 2024 open-label study of 30 veterans in Nature Medicine, anxiety scores fell a month after ibogaine, but there was no control group, and no one was studied for health anxiety. Read it as theory, not proof. More on the science in how iboga works.
What we have seen since 2012
Since 2012 we have welcomed 7,677 guests. Many carried a quiet fear of illness alongside what brought them. In that time we have seen a traditional treatment help people with this kind of struggle, sometimes profoundly and lastingly.
Some guests say that after the ceremony a twinge or a racing pulse felt less like a verdict, and they could let it pass without searching. This is our experience, not a clinical study.
Who holds it
Michael and Cory open and hold the ceremony; Tania, our psychologist with close to a decade at Mexico's National Institute of Psychiatry, screens for what iboga cannot hold and carries the integration; Dr Villarreal keeps the body safe.

Safety
Three things matter most: your safety today, how the night will feel in your body, and an honest screening.
Your safety first. Health anxiety is serious. A large Swedish cohort study found a higher risk of suicide in people with hypochondriasis; a smaller study in Hong Kong found no raised risk of self-harm. We screen for it carefully. If you have thoughts of ending your life, call or text 988 in the US or Canada, today. The retreat can wait; you matter more.
The night in your body. Iboga brings strong bodily effects, such as unsteady walking and vivid dream-like images. If you fear illness, these can feel like an emergency. We prepare you in advance, and the physician stays in the room all night. A history of psychosis or bipolar disorder usually means this is not the right path: mania has been reported after ibogaine.
Screening, once. We give you your results once, clearly, and we do not run extra tests just for reassurance. Health anxiety does not rule out real illness, so anything that needs follow-up is named plainly. Every guest has a medical screening before travel; read how we protect your heart. Tell us every medicine you take, and never stop one on your own. Guests must be 18 or older.
Who it is for
The retreat suits people who want a long look at the fear of illness and are ready to keep working with a therapist after.
Adults with health anxiety or cyberchondria, with or without a diagnosis, who are in CBT or ready to start. People who want a long, honest look at where the fear of illness began.
Active psychosis or recent mania, acute suicidality, panic so strong that the night's bodily effects would be too much right now, a symptom still being investigated, a medication that cannot be tapered in time, or pregnancy. The psychologist and the physician decide together; sometimes the answer is a later date.
Why it is hard
Cyberchondria is a research term, not a diagnosis: repeated online health searching that leaves a worried person more distressed. Related diagnoses do exist. DSM-5-TR describes illness anxiety disorder and somatic symptom disorder, while ICD-11 keeps hypochondriasis. Health anxiety affects roughly 2% to 13% of adults, depending on how it is measured.
Each search brings brief relief, then a worse possibility, and that on-off relief keeps the loop going. Sensations get read as disease; reassurance fades fast. None of this means the symptoms are imagined. It means the body's alarm is set too high, and therapy can help turn it down.
How to cope
Health anxiety responds well to cognitive behavioral therapy. In a 2024 review, CBT did clearly better than other approaches, and most of the gains held 12 to 18 months later. Internet-delivered CBT worked as well as face-to-face CBT in a trial of 204 adults, and online CBT also reduced cyberchondria itself in a smaller study. Some SSRIs have helped in trials of hypochondriasis. Keeping one steady clinician, without unnecessary tests, helps too.
When the urge to search comes, set a delay, then a limit: wait before you look, and stop after one trusted source. Keep one steady doctor, and agree with them how often to check, instead of seeking new tests for reassurance. If a doctor has examined you, write down what they said, then reread that note instead of searching.
A therapist who uses CBT can help you drop the checking step by step; internet CBT programs are an option if one is hard to find. Free self-help for anxiety is also available from Anxiety Canada.

Questions about cyberchondria
Anxious, repeated searching about symptoms that leaves you more worried, not less. It is a form of reassurance seeking, and a research term rather than a diagnosis.
No. The related diagnoses are illness anxiety disorder and somatic symptom disorder in DSM-5-TR, and hypochondriasis in ICD-11.
In ICD-11, yes: hypochondriasis (6B23). DSM-5-TR replaced it with two diagnoses: illness anxiety disorder, when there are few or no symptoms, and somatic symptom disorder, when bodily symptoms are significant.
Between about 2% and 13% of adults, and more in medical clinics, depending on how it is measured. Health anxiety scores among students rose between 1985 and 2017, but the rise was not linked to internet uptake.
Delay and limit searches, keep one steady doctor, and reread what they told you instead of searching again. CBT, including online CBT, is designed to break this habit.
Yes. Anxiety can create real sensations in the body. It is still wise to get one proper medical check, then work on the worry with a therapist rather than with more tests.
It is serious. One large Swedish study found a higher suicide risk in people with hypochondriasis. If you have thoughts of ending your life, call or text 988 in the US or Canada now.
No study has tested iboga or ibogaine for cyberchondria, health anxiety or hypochondriasis, so we do not claim it does. What we offer is a supervised night of reflection inside a tradition, with a psychologist before and after, as a complement to CBT.
