Histrionic personality

Iboga for histrionic personality: a supervised place to be seen as you are

Since 2012 we have held a medically supervised iboga retreat on the Mayan Riviera near Cancun, Mexico. A traditional Missoko Bwiti ceremony is paired with a psychologist, then three months of follow-up at home. If you feel you must be noticed to feel real, and your emotions move faster than you can hold them, this page explains how we help.

Histrionic personality: the ceremony, the numbers, the research and how to prepare.

How it works

A quiet night with yourself, held by a steady team

Being warm, expressive or dramatic is not a disorder. For some people, though, the need to be the center of attention runs the whole of life, and the feelings underneath stay hard to name. That pattern usually grew for a reason.

No study has tested iboga or ibogaine for histrionic personality disorder. What follows is our experience with 7,677 guests since 2012. It is a supervised opening alongside psychotherapy, never a replacement for it.

How iboga acts on the brain

What the alkaloids may do, read honestly

The body turns ibogaine, iboga's main alkaloid, into noribogaine, which stays for days. In lab studies, noribogaine raises serotonin signaling and acts on the kappa opioid system, part of how the brain handles stress. In theory, these actions could steady emotions that rise and fall fast. In animal studies, a single dose switches on growth-factor genes linked to plasticity.

People often describe a dream-like state while awake: in one clinical study, 14 patients reported vivid memories for 3 to 7 hours. That may help someone look at feelings they usually act out instead. An open-label study of 30 veterans found large drops in PTSD, depression and anxiety a month after ibogaine, with no control group (Cherian et al., Nature Medicine, 2024). None of this shows an effect on histrionic personality. Read more on how iboga works.

What we have seen since 2012

What guests who needed to be seen describe

Since 2012, with 7,677 guests, we have seen a traditional treatment help people with this kind of struggle, sometimes profoundly and lastingly. Guests who have lived for other people's eyes often describe a night of quiet: no one to win over, only their own story, and feelings they could finally name.

Afterwards, many speak of feeling worth something without an audience, and of relationships that feel less like a stage. Some find the change smaller than they hoped. This is our experience, not a clinical study, and the slower work continues in therapy at home.

Who holds it

A practitioner, a psychologist, a physician

Michael and Cory open and hold the ceremony. Tania, our psychologist with close to a decade at Mexico's National Institute of Psychiatry, screens for what iboga cannot hold and carries the integration. Dr Villarreal keeps the body safe.

Safety

Clear consent, steady people, no pressure

People with histrionic personality can be open to suggestion, and their emotions can shift quickly. So we explain everything plainly, ask for your consent at each step, keep the same staff beside you, and allow no group pressure during or after a ceremony.

Depression often comes with histrionic personality, and in one study of people seen after a suicide attempt, those with histrionic personality had acted more impulsively. The psychologist asks about suicidal thoughts directly, and kindly. Psychedelic medicines are not proven safe for personality disorders: one small study suggested a higher risk of feeling worse a month later for people who reported one. We also screen for bipolar disorder and psychosis, since mania has been reported after unsupervised ibogaine.

Never stop a medicine on your own: our physician plans any change with your prescribing doctor. A heart condition needs a careful look first: read how we protect your heart.

Who it is for

And who should wait

The psychologist and the physician decide together. Sometimes the answer is a later date.

Why it is hard

Why the pattern is hard to see from inside

Seeking attention can become the main way to feel worth something, so letting go of it feels like disappearing. Many people come for help with depression or physical symptoms, not for the pattern itself, so it can go unnamed for years. About 1.8% of US adults met the criteria in one large survey.

Personality changes slowly, usually over a year of work or more, though many traits ease with age. Rates look similar in women and men in community studies, even though it has long been seen as a women's diagnosis.

How to cope

What helps, for you and for those close to you

Psychotherapy is the main path. No medicine is approved for any personality disorder, though a doctor may prescribe for depression that comes with it.

How to overcome histrionic personality traits

Look for a therapist experienced with personality. Psychodynamic therapy is the usual approach: it helps you notice what attention gives you, then put the feelings into words instead. In a trial of 323 patients with several personality disorders, including histrionic, schema therapy did better than usual care. Little is known yet about CBT or medicine for histrionic personality itself.

If you love someone with this pattern, warmth with steady limits helps more than either rescuing or withdrawing. Notice and value the quiet, real moments. The NAMI HelpLine offers information and support for families at 1-800-950-NAMI (6264); it is not a crisis line.

Questions about histrionic personality

Straight answers

Can iboga help with histrionic personality disorder?

No study has tested iboga or ibogaine for histrionic personality, so we make no medical claim for it. What guests describe since 2012 is a quiet night with their own story, and feelings they could name afterwards. We offer it as a supervised opening alongside psychotherapy.

What is histrionic personality disorder?

A lasting pattern of intense, quickly shifting emotion and a strong need for attention, beginning by early adulthood, that causes real distress or harm to daily life. It sits in Cluster B of the DSM-5-TR. The ICD-11 does not name it; it describes personality disorder by severity and traits.

Is being dramatic a disorder?

No. Being expressive, warm or theatrical is part of many personalities. It becomes a diagnosis only when the pattern is pervasive and causes significant distress or impairment. Only a clinician can make it.

How common is histrionic personality disorder?

About 1.8% of adults in a survey of 43,093 people in the United States. Medical references put it under 2%.

Is it more common in women?

Community studies suggest similar rates in women and men. Earlier reports of more women may come from who was studied, mostly hospital patients.

Is there medication for histrionic personality?

None is approved. Medicines may help with depression that comes with it. Never stop a medicine on your own.

What therapy helps?

Psychodynamic therapy is the usual approach. Schema therapy has some trial support in mixed groups of personality disorders. Evidence for histrionic personality alone is very limited.

Will other guests see me fall apart?

The ceremony is mostly inward. Groups are small, eight guests at most, and staff keep the room calm. What you share afterwards is your choice.

Can my therapist at home be involved?

Yes, with your consent. We can send a summary to your therapist, and integration calls can include them if you want.
