Peter Pan syndrome

Iboga for Peter Pan syndrome: a supervised retreat for getting unstuck

Since 2012 we have held a medically supervised iboga retreat on the Mayan Riviera near Cancun, Mexico. A traditional Missoko Bwiti ceremony is paired with a psychologist, then three months of follow-up at home. Guests who feel stuck between youth and adult life often describe a long, honest look at their choices, then a clearer sense of what they want to build. Peter Pan syndrome is not a medical diagnosis, and you do not need one to talk to us.

  • 7,677guests welcomed since 2012

Peter Pan syndrome: the ceremony, the numbers, the research and how to prepare.

How it works

A night of looking back, a plan for going forward

Peter Pan syndrome is a popular term from a 1983 self-help book, not a diagnosis. It usually describes adults who avoid commitment, steady work or bills. We take the struggle seriously without pinning a label on you.

No study has tested iboga or ibogaine for this pattern, and we do not claim it makes anyone grow up. What follows comes from our experience with 7,677 guests since 2012: a supervised opening alongside therapy, never a replacement for it.

How iboga acts on the brain

Why avoidance loops might loosen

Avoidance runs in loops: skip the hard thing, feel relief, skip it again. In theory, iboga's alkaloids may make loops like this easier to shift. In lab work, ibogaine dampens an NMDA glutamate channel involved in learning, while noribogaine, the long-lasting product the body makes from it, touches the brain's stress opioid system. Animal studies suggest a single dose switches on growth-factor genes in reward circuits.

People also describe a dream-like waking state, with vivid memories and imagined futures. In the strongest human study so far (Cherian et al., Nature Medicine, 2024), 30 veterans reported large drops in depression and anxiety a month later, in a study without a control group. None of this has been tested for Peter Pan syndrome. More on how iboga works.

What we have seen since 2012

Stuck, then moving

Since 2012, with 7,677 guests, we have seen a traditional treatment help people with this kind of struggle, sometimes profoundly and lastingly. Many arrived drifting: plans left half-done, relationships on hold, a life that never quite started.

Afterwards they describe seeing their avoidance plainly, less fear of failing, more wish to show up for others. Some took on a hard task they had put off for years. Others changed less, and the follow-up mattered most. This is our experience, not a clinical study.

Who holds it

A practitioner, a psychologist, a physician

Michael and Cory open and hold the ceremony. Tania, our psychologist with close to a decade at Mexico's National Institute of Psychiatry, screens for what iboga cannot hold and carries the integration. Dr Villarreal keeps the body safe, in the room all night.

Safety

Safety comes before the ceremony

Behind the label there is often something else worth checking: depression, anxiety, ADHD or substance use, especially alcohol, cannabis or stimulants. The psychologist screens for these, and for suicidal thoughts, before anything is booked.

ADHD stimulants and many other medicines need a review by our physician with your prescribing doctor. Never stop a medicine on your own. Guests must be 18 or over. Read how we protect your heart.

If a parent or partner contacted us for you, we speak with you alone. The choice to come has to be yours.

Who it is for

And who should wait

The psychologist and the physician decide together. Sometimes the answer is a later date.

Why it is hard

Why it is hard to grow out of

Avoidance pays off right away. Skip the bill, the interview or the difficult talk, and the anxiety drops. The cost arrives later, so the habit keeps winning.

Partners or parents who take over can keep the pattern in place without meaning to. Some of what gets called Peter Pan syndrome is also normal: psychologist Jeffrey Arnett describes ages 18 to 25 as emerging adulthood, a real stage of working out who you are.

How to cope

What helps when you feel stuck

Start by ruling things out. Depression, anxiety, ADHD and substance use can all look like a refusal to grow up, and each has treatments with good evidence.

How to overcome Peter Pan syndrome

Ask a doctor or psychologist for an assessment, then work with a therapist on clear goals: one responsibility at a time, kept for weeks, not days. No therapy has been tested for this label itself, so the work targets what sits underneath.

If a partner keeps picking up the slack, couple therapy can help: emotionally focused couple therapy has moderate evidence for couple distress in general. For the partner or the parent, the hardest step is often to stop rescuing.

If you need someone now

If you have thoughts of ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or 9-8-8 in Canada, at any hour.

For free, confidential referrals to mental health or substance use care in the US, call the SAMHSA National Helpline at 1-800-662-HELP (4357), 24/7. In Canada, dial 2-1-1.

Questions about Peter Pan syndrome

Straight answers

What is Peter Pan syndrome?

A popular term for adults, often men, who avoid grown-up responsibilities such as steady work, bills or commitment. It is not a medical diagnosis.

Is Peter Pan syndrome a real diagnosis?

No. It is not in the DSM-5-TR or the ICD-11, and there are no validated criteria or scales. The struggle behind it can still be real, and worth taking seriously.

Who coined the term?

Psychologist Dan Kiley, in his 1983 self-help book The Peter Pan Syndrome. A related older idea from Jungian psychology is the puer aeternus, the eternal boy.

Is it the same as emerging adulthood?

No. Emerging adulthood, roughly ages 18 to 25, is a normal life stage of exploring identity, described by Jeffrey Arnett in 2000. Reaching milestones later is a social trend, not a disorder.

Can women have Peter Pan syndrome?

The label is mostly used for men, but there is no research either way. The patterns behind it, such as avoidance or depression, affect everyone.

Can iboga make someone more mature?

No study shows that, and we would never promise it. What guests describe is an honest look at their own life. The change comes from the work done in the months after.

Can I book a retreat for my partner or my son?

Only they can decide to come, and we speak with every guest directly. You can encourage an assessment for depression, ADHD or substance use, and try not to rescue them.

What should be checked first?

Depression, anxiety, ADHD and substance use. They are common, they can look like avoidance, and each one has treatments that work.
